The Future of Healing: Shifting From Trauma Informed Care to Healing Centered Engagement

 Blog#10

1. "Trauma-informed care has become an important approach in schools and agencies that serve young people who have been exposed to trauma, and here’s why. Some school leaders believe that the best way to address disruptive classroom behavior is through harsh discipline." This quote stood out for me because even though it can be controversial I do believe that harsh discipline can affect students if instructor do not inform themselves more about the students to see if they are having any issues at home or had a trauma in their lives. So I believe the first step should be to get information about the student.

2. "Researchers have pointed out the ways in which patients have redefined the terms used to describe their illnesses in ways that affirmed, humanized and dignified their condition. For example, in the early 1990s AIDS activists challenged the term “gay-related immune deficiency” because the term stigmatized gay men and failed to adequately capture the medical accuracy of the condition." This quote stood out to me because it made realize that times have change and even though it has been a long process we have improve as a society and it reminded me of a discussion we had in class that talk about how we still have a long way to go.

3. "When people advocate for policies and opportunities that address causes of trauma, such as lack of access to mental health, these activities contribute to a sense of purpose, power and control over life situations." This quote stood out to me because I did not realize the impact policies could have in causes such as trauma and mental health and how important they were in playing a role.

Discussion point: It discusses the most effecting ways to deal with trauma and mental health.

What Stood Out

 Blog#9

1. The first activity that stood out to me was when we played with the cards. It was great to see how different personalities reacted with the confusion on the  rules. When I become an instructor I would love to do this activity with my students.

2. Secondly it was the S.C.W.A.A.M.P culture of power. This made me realized and understand better that

there are many factors that play a role in how we view or shape ourselves.

Bilinguals

Blog#8

1."Some students were even punish for using their languages in classes."This quote makes a connection with my cousin because when he was little he was told by an instructor that Spanish was a not allow in her classroom, which lead for him to not develop his Spanish and never wanted to learn it anymore.

2."Initially I was uncomfortable using or really having Spanish spoken a lot in my classroom because I felt like I was the teacher and I needed what was happening and what was going on all the time." This quote is relevant because it made have answer my question on why the instructor my cousin had was against him speaking Spanish in class.

3."Talk to parents and students about their language goals." I believe that this quote is very important because parent's thoughts and opinions are super important in the student success. And also asking students about their thoughts will help the instructor find the best method as possible for them to learn.

Main point: Learning about bilingual students and how another language can help them improve their learning.

Pronouns

Blog#7

1."Sometimes we feel very differently on the inside than we do on the outside." This quote was very important for me because it taught me in general in the world for example, someone can be smiling but still  be suffering on the inside.

2."Skies likes to be called all the pronouns." This quote is it help me incorporate new knowledge because I did not know that there were people who liked to be called all the pronouns. This can be very helpful for me because I plan to become a PE instructor and I will have to deal a lot with pronouns.

3."Respect people's names and respect people's pronouns." This quote was very relevant because it taught me that we can all make a difference in how people feel on the inside by respecting them. Which means that the solution in in our hands.

Main point: Learn how we can impact on how people feel in the inside by respecting their pronouns not matter how they look on the exterior.

Going To School

Blog#6

I made many connections with Ana because she is from El Salvador just like me. The first connection I made was with her mother that reminds me a lot of my mom because they both work during the weekends and my mother's first jobs was also in a restaurant.

Another connection that I could relate to is when they talk about the war in the El Salvador because is an event that changed the lives of many Salvadorians and it will never be forgotten. My mother tells me and my siblings stories similar to the one Ana and her mother shared in how she was struck by a bomb.

Lastly, I also connected with Ana because I believe her goal is to succeed to make her mother's sacrifice be worth it, which is also my goal by completing my major and be able to help her financially.

Main goal, show the some of the many cases of kids with disabilities that are going to school, it shows how hard they work.

literacy with an Attitude

 Blog #5

Connections

1. In the Introduction "Some minorities feel they have been wronged by mainstreamAmericans and that "acting white" is a betrayal of their people. They develop what sociologists call "oppositional identity." This quote makes a connection to when I was in middle school and I use to hear comments of people of different ethnicity telling their own race to stop acting white. I did see that the students who were told to not act a certain way would be influence by their pairs. Most of the students were saying these comments were usually the problematic child of the class.

2. PG#4 "I didn't say to an errant student, what are you doing? I said, "Stop that and get to work." This quote makes a connection with from one of our last reading a assignments where we learned that you should not ask questions when teaching students, but instead teachers need to order students. And it reminded that instructor Bogad told us that her friends mocked her for doing that in one of her classes because it is proven that students do not work if teachers ask questions instead of ordering..

3. PG#15 "Such workers are not rewarded for critical analysis. They are rewarded for knowing the answers, for knowing where to find answers, for which form, regulation, technique or procedure is correct." This makes a connection to many coworkers that I had where I have notice that some of them have amazing critical skill however they do not get the appreciation they deserve. I remember one in particular his name was Miguel, he would fix a lot stuff when they did not work, for instance the friers. However, he never got promoted but instead they would make him do extra work for the same salary.

Fin argues that we are not doing good in teaching the literacy to the working/middle class so they can have a better chance of succeeding, since the system is almost made for them not to reach their full potential.

What to look for in a classroom

Blog # 3

Alfie Kohn states that there are many ways in which the classroom plays a role in students' learning. For instance, how students are sitting or signs on the walls of positive quotes can create a better learning environment for students. On the other hand, Kohn argues that there are many ways in which the classroom can also impact students negatively. For example, when the professor's voice is not the loudest in the room, there is a reason to be worried that students are not in the right environment to learn

  • Kohn argues that the environment is essential for students' learning, and it can determine whether they succeed or fail in the class.
