literacy with an Attitude

Connections

1. In the Introduction "Some minorities feel they have been wronged by mainstreamAmericans and that "acting white" is a betrayal of their people. They develop what sociologists call "oppositional identity." This quote makes a connection to when I was in middle school and I use to hear comments of people of different ethnicity telling their own race to stop acting white. I did see that the students who were told to not act a certain way would be influence by their pairs. Most of the students were saying these comments were usually the problematic child of the class.

2. PG#4 "I didn't say to an errant student, what are you doing? I said, "Stop that and get to work." This quote makes a connection with from one of our last reading a assignments where we learned that you should not ask questions when teaching students, but instead teachers need to order students. And it reminded that instructor Bogad told us that her friends mocked her for doing that in one of her classes because it is proven that students do not work if teachers ask questions instead of ordering..

3. PG#15 "Such workers are not rewarded for critical analysis. They are rewarded for knowing the answers, for knowing where to find answers, for which form, regulation, technique or procedure is correct." This makes a connection to many coworkers that I had where I have notice that some of them have amazing critical skill however they do not get the appreciation they deserve. I remember one in particular his name was Miguel, he would fix a lot stuff when they did not work, for instance the friers. However, he never got promoted but instead they would make him do extra work for the same salary.

Fin argues that we are not doing good in teaching the literacy to the working/middle class so they can have a better chance of succeeding, since the system is almost made for them not to reach their full potential.
